IOT Introduction

It is estimated that the number of internet connected devices will be in the region of 20 billion by 2020. This is a staggering amount of devices which can be anything from fitness monitors to utility meters. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the term used to describe these internet connected devices and the systems and applications which harness the power of the information they provide.

IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) is IoT in an industrial context. Also referred to as Industry 4.0, it is the 4th industrial revolution where key parts of the value chain have connectivity to cloud based data systems allowing for analysis and control of all aspects of the manufacturing process and beyond. It is a vision for a ‘Smart Factory’ where efficiencies are improved and costs are reduced and manufacturing becomes more flexible, adapting seamlessly to market demands and supply chain variations.

The enabling technologies for Industry 4.0 are already here. Cloud based storage systems , big data analytics tools, connected industrial devices and web based real-time visualisation applications are commonplace.
